HOW DO I CLAIM EXCESS PROCEEDS?
When a tax-defaulted property is sold at public auction, the minimum bid includes the taxes, penalties, and costs associated with the property. If the property sells for more than the amount required to satisfy those obligations, the remaining funds are referred to as excess proceeds.
When excess proceeds from a tax sale exceed $150, the Treasurer-Tax Collector mails an “Excess Proceeds from the Sale of Tax-Defaulted Property” notice to parties of interest at their last known mailing address within 90 days following the sale.
Individuals or entities who believe they are entitled to the excess proceeds may submit a claim directly to the Riverside County Treasurer-Tax Collector using the claim form mailed to them and instructions provided below.
YOU CAN FILE A CLAIM YOURSELF
Eligible parties may file a claim directly with the Riverside County Treasurer-Tax Collector at NO COST.
You do not need to hire a third party or recovery service to claim excess proceeds. However, California law allows parties of interest to authorize an agent to submit a claim on their behalf, and those agents may charge a fee for their services.
Parties of interest MUST complete and return the claim form mailed to them by the Treasurer-Tax Collector on or before the claim deadline. Claims received after the deadline WILL NOT be considered pursuant to law. Claims submitted by fax or email will NOT be accepted.
Please refer to the Claim Form Instructions below for guidance on properly completing and submitting your claim.
